Cafe Alma tells the story of Almaty through the dishes and ingredients many locals have known since childhood — without simply recreating Soviet classics or a 20th-century coffee house. The kitchen is led by chef Andrey Titov, who suggests starting the day with an Almaty breakfast of baursaks, bryndza and fresh baguette; an English breakfast with horsemeat sausage; or a Soviet breakfast with Doktorskaya sausage and white bread. Oatmeal, syrniki and oladushki are also on the menu. The dessert counter is lined daily with medovik, Napoleon, kartoshka and other old favourites. The interior follows the same mood: a light-filled space, restrained colours and photographs of the city from decades past.

Big Apple sits right on the Terrenkur, Almaty’s much-loved route for morning walks and runs. After seven years at 145 Abylai Khan Avenue, the team relocated here, placing everyday food and coffee at the heart of the concept. The breakfast menu moves between American and Almaty classics, bowls and lighter ways to start the day. The coffee list runs from flat whites and raf coffee to alternative brews and the house Bulletproof coffee. Put in your kilometres, then come in for breakfast.
While Cafe Alma looks back at Almaty’s past, neighbouring Ami sets a very different tone. Founder Askar Baitassov drew inspiration from the restaurants of American restaurateur Keith McNally and the atmosphere of a classic French bistro. The result is an elegant city café with a distinctly Parisian feel. The phrase La sauce fait passer le morceau feels perfectly at home here — especially over French toast with strawberries, oladushki with red caviar or oatmeal with vanilla ice cream. Those after something heartier can choose fried eggs with horsemeat sausages, steak on brioche or Turkish eggs — each dish both satisfying and unexpected.

Fika has become one of the city’s standout breakfast spots. It is, above all, a place for mornings. The menu offers dozens of ways to start the day: build-your-own breakfasts, katsu sandwiches, a breakfast burger, syrniki and porridge — with less predictable options such as pearl barley with smoked celery and mushrooms. Desserts and pastries are another point of pride, while the drinks list covers filter coffee and pour-overs, smoothies and matcha, Kazakh-style tea and lemonades. The interior is a reason to visit in itself: Scandinavian design and carefully considered details look good even when the building is surrounded by scaffolding. Mornings get busy, so do not wait until the last minute if you want a table.
At Six Coffee+Wine, the space is every bit as interesting as the menu. Shell stone, stained glass, metal stools, a vivid coffee machine and a dedicated work area give the eye plenty to linger on. The health-conscious can opt for a protein omelette with broccoli; the ravenous, a full breakfast with sausages and hash browns. For aesthetes, there is a Danish breakfast with Maasdam, ham, confiture and whipped butter; for those drawn to luxury, a set with salmon, red caviar and six-minute eggs. And for anyone at risk of attacking passers-by without sugar in the morning, there are banana syrniki. On the way out, pause at the dessert counter for flaky pastries and cakes.

At Aroma, mornings take their time. Panoramic windows, a softly furnished interior with Provençal touches and a refreshingly straightforward menu set the scene for a long breakfast. The more substantial choices include a waffle with scrambled eggs and crisp mushrooms, Mexican shakshuka with sausage and nachos, and the local favourite: Turkish eggs with labneh, flaky flatbread and green adjika. For a dose of serotonin, look to the sweeter side of the menu. Alongside porridge, there is mango yoghurt with homemade granola, doughnuts with sour cream and whipped cottage cheese with berry compote.

Astra Grand Cafe offers the most elegant breakfast setting in this guide. Breakfast here feels more like an outing to a classic grand café, complete with porcelain, immaculate table settings, a striking interior and attentive service. This is less a place for a quick bite than somewhere to enjoy the occasion of going out in the morning. And once you have committed to luxury, the very least you can order is the red caviar sandwich for KZT 8,700. Then again, at Astra, even the omelette with stracciatella and eel, crisp crêpes with mortadella and zapekanka with strawberries feel celebratory.
